If you’re thinking about getting your teeth straightened, you’re probably also thinking about whether to go with traditional braces or Invisalign. Since Invisalign costs are usually a little higher than what you’d pay for metal braces, many patients wonder whether they’re worth the extra money.
We can’t make that decision for you, but we can tell you that most of our patients would choose Invisalign in a heartbeat. Frankly, so would we! Here are just a few of the reasons why.
1. It’s More Discreet
The main benefit of Invisalign is right in the name: the aligners are nearly invisible when worn. While people will still be able to spot them if they look closely, most people will never know you’re undergoing Invisalign treatment unless you tell them. You’ll be able to smile with confidence in social and professional settings during your entire treatment, no matter how long it takes.
2. It’s More Comfortable
Wearing traditional braces hurts. It’s not unbearable by any means, but your teeth will feel sore after most adjustments and you’ll probably cut your cheeks or gums on the wires at least a few times.
Invisalign takes all that metal out of the equation, leaving you pain-free for the most part. You’ll still feel some mild discomfort when switching to a new tray, but it should pass quickly. You might not even remember you’re wearing them most of the time!
3. It’s Easier to Keep Your Teeth Clean
Brushing and flossing with braces is notoriously difficult – and with so many extra places where food can get trapped, it’s also more important than ever.
Luckily, Invisalign aligners are removable. You won’t have to worry about brushing and flossing around them, and you shouldn’t get food trapped in them if you follow your dentist’s directions and take them out them before eating. Aside from brushing an extra time before you put your trays back in, you won’t need to do anything special to keep your teeth healthy during your treatment.
4. Your Appointments Will Be Shorter
Getting traditional braces means signing up for months of long appointments with your dentist or orthodontist, getting adjustments and progress checks that often take the better part of an afternoon.
You’ll still need to get progress checks done every 6 to 8 weeks during Invisalign treatment, but each visit will be much shorter since adjustments aren’t done manually by your provider. You also won’t have to worry about squeezing in emergency appointments to get broken wires and brackets fixed. If you lose a tray, just ask your provider for a new one and stop by their office to pick it up.
5. You Can Eat Whatever You Want
From popcorn and crusty bread to caramels and chewing gum, there’s a long list of foods you’ll have to avoid while wearing metal braces. That’s not a problem during Invisalign treatment. As long as you brush and floss properly afterward, you can eat anything you want.
