Sensodyne is a brand of toothpaste that is specially formulated for people with sensitive teeth. However, not everyone who buys it suffers from this problem. Can you use Sensodyne without having sensitive teeth? If so, should you?
Today, we’ll be answering both of these questions with an in-depth look at Sensodyne’s ingredients, benefits, and drawbacks.
How Does Sensodyne Work?
Most Sensodyne formulas contain one of two active ingredients that provide sensitivity relief. Each one works differently.
- Potassium nitrate changes the polarity of the nerves within your teeth, making them less susceptible to pain.
- Stannous fluoride blocks microscopic openings in your tooth enamel known as tubules. This prevents things like sugar and extreme temperatures from irritating the sensitive dentin inside your teeth. Exposing your teeth to those stimuli will then cause you less pain.
Neither of these ingredients will harm you if you don’t have sensitive teeth. You just won’t get the specific benefits they offer since your teeth are already pain-free. If you’ve struggled with sensitive teeth in the past, though, using Sensodyne preemptively might help you keep the pain from coming back.
All Sensodyne formulas contain some type of fluoride, too, so you’ll still get the cavity protection you need to keep your teeth healthy.
Why Choose a Different Toothpaste?
While Sensodyne is perfectly safe for anyone to use, there are a few reasons why it might not be the best choice for people who don’t struggle with sensitive teeth.
- It’s expensive. Sensodyne costs more than standard fluoride toothpaste, and the extra expense may not be worth it if its special properties won’t benefit you.
- It can stain your teeth. The stannous fluoride in certain formulations of Sensodyne can leave dark surface stains on your teeth, making them look dirty or dull. This is more likely to happen the longer you use it.
- You might have an adverse reaction. Some people experience unpleasant side effects like gum pain, gum or tongue swelling, or a burning sensation in the mouth while using Sensodyne. These issues will usually go away if you stop using the product.
